Boulder County sees health and wellness as a core value and recognizes that good health is good business. For over a decade, Boulder County has offered employees the opportunity to participate in health and wellness initiatives. In 2006, Boulder County hired Healthbreak Incorporated, a worksite wellness management company, to guide its organization in creating a culture of health that drives positive health outcomes for the County and its employees. Since 2006, improvements have been documented in all of the top five categories with significant improvements in Cancer Risk (20% lower) and Low Nutrition(14% improvement). In 2008 and 2009 respectively, repeat participants in the wellness program had fewer health expenses than those employees that did not participate.
The improvements in risk reduction are a result of the comprehensive nature of the program. The program integrates a system that assesses and measures risk while delivering onsite programs that help to drive changes in those known risks In addition, the SimplyWell point-based program encourages employees to track their progress over time to be eligible for incentives that are offered throughout the year. "Having an onsite presence where employees have access to health experts and meaningful programs is part of what makes the program successful," says Susan Mann, Boulder County Human Resources Specialist.
